Genesis 1:1
In The Beginning
Genesis is the foundation of the whole Bible and is definitely one of the most important books of the Bible in terms of its influence on the rest of the Bible. There is therefore tremendous effort being made in both the physical realm and in the spiritual realm by those who oppose the true God to discredit this vitally important foundation. We must therefore approach the study of this book prayerfully with awareness that there will be a battle for our minds.
Who wrote Genesis? Like the rest of the Bible, Genesis was inspired by the mind of God but recorded by men. Moses was unquestionably the author/editor who put the contents of the book together in their present form but most likely there were quite several people over the years before Moses who recorded significant family records of their lifetime on separate documents. These independent written historical records were protected by God as they were passed down over the generations, likely from father to son, until Moses, guided by the Holy Spirit, compiled all the separate pieces editing them and bringing them together into one account known as "Genesis".
(Henry Morris, "The Genesis Record", Grand Rapids, Michigan: Baker Book House, 1976, p. 26-27)
Genesis 1:1
In the beginning of what? This statement identifies not only the beginning of the world but the creation of time, the beginning of time. If time existed before the world began you couldn’t say, "In the beginning . . . you would have to say "Once upon a time", or "After many eons of time." Time is something that God created, prior to Genesis 1:1 God existed, but time did not exist. Time began when this world began. But God existed before the beginning of this world and before the beginning of time. God is eternal. In John 17:4-5, Jesus said to the Father, "I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do. 5And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was."
Time began and time will end, but we who have eternal life will continue to exist in God’s presence for all eternity.
Remember Herbert Spencer’s discovery which we learned about earlier in our introduction, that all reality, all that exists in the universe, can be contained in five categories...time, force, action, space and matter.
(John MacArthur‟s 1997 sermon notes taken from his website, John MacArthur Collections: http://www.biblebb.com/files/MAC/90-208.htm) In the opening verse of the Bible God identified for us the basis of all reality, the basis for everything that exists in the universe; "In the beginning," that's time..."God," that's force, "created," that's action, "the heavens," that's space, "and the earth,"
that's matter.
"In the beginning God . . ."
Either you begin with some unimaginably dense pre-existing mass that exploded (the Big Bang) and out of that explosion scattered all the debris that over billions of hears has randomly formed all the stars and planets and meteorites that make up our universe, as the evolutionists believe; or you begin with an unimaginably vast and powerful pre-existent God. Only God is eternal and self existing. God always was and no one ever created Him. We
2
cannot comprehend this but the only alternative is that our universe and all matter is eternal and self existing and this is also incomprehensible. But that is your choice, either a self existing, intelligent, eternal and powerful God designed and created it all, or self existing eternal matter mindlessly, randomly arranged itself into the present beautiful and complex universe filled with amazing life forms that we are now part of and enjoy.
"In the beginning God Created"
– The word "created" as it is used here means to make out of nothing, or to call into existence that which had no prior existence without using any preexisting matter. (Eerdman‟s Bible Dictionary) Only God can create something out of nothing. Men can take existing material and make a variety of things using that material, but we cannot create things out of nothing. Only God can do that. The evolutionary process does not work as an explanation of how God created, as many Christians now believe, because evolution involves a pre-existing substance changing over time into something different. But repeatedly in the first chapter of Genesis we are told in a variety of ways that God created out of nothing. For example He repeatedly said "Let there be . . . and it was so
"; in other words God spoke and all that He declared was created, or came into existence out of nothing. God did not simply create the initial materials and everything else evolved over great periods of time out of that raw material.
Look at a very important statement made in
Hebrews 11:3, "By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible." God’s word here rules out the possibility of the evolutionary process having been part of God’s creation process. "The things which are seen (plants, insects, birds, animals, planets, and stars) were not made of things which are visible
." Can God state it any more plainly than that?
"
In the beginning God created the heavens
" This does not mean the stars and planets of heaven, they were not made until the fourth day, nor does it refer to the spiritual dimension where God’s home is, in heaven as there is no indication that it was included in this creation process. But the word "heavens" in this context is similar to our modern term "space." Outer space, inner space, atmospheric space, etc.
"In the beginning God created the heavens and the Earth"
– the word "earth" here refers to matter, which is the opposite of space. But the very first substance that God created He would shape into this planet which we still call "Earth". According to God’s word, at this initial stage of creation, there were no other planets, stars, or other material bodies in space. None of them came into existence until the fourth day. There was no other matter floating through the heavens as a result of a Big Bang. There was just space and a clump of matter which was about to become the planet Earth. According to God’s word, this planet was the very first material substance to be created in the universe.
Let’s go back to the opening phrase of verse one because it is so strongly challenged by an unbelieving world which increasingly includes many Christians.
"In the Beginning"
Some modern scholars trying to accommodate the evolutionists unproven claim for the great age of the universe have suggested that we should insert a gap between verse one and verse two into which we could then fit the billions of years of the unproven evolutionary
3
theory. Then they try to reinterpret the rest of the chapter in a variety of non-literal ways to make it appear compatible with the atheists’ evolutionary theory. The very popular Gap Theory presented by Thomas Chalmers and promoted by the study notes in the Scofield Bible has become one of the most popular interpretations of Genesis 1-2 among North American Christians because they believe it allows for an old earth before God created man.
However Jesus did not subscribe to the Gap Theory. In
Mark 10:6 Jesus said, "But from the beginning of the creation, God „made them male and female.‟"
Here Jesus Himself allows no room for millions or billions of years of time before mankind came on the scene. Jesus identifies the creation of Adam and Eve with the beginning of the existence of this creation, not after a long period of time. So if you embrace the Gap Theory you now have to figure out how you are going to reinterpret Jesus’ statement in Mark 10:6.
Another problem with the Gap theory along with all other Old Earth theories require that there were billions of years of death and suffering on the earth long before the sin and fall of man. In
Romans 5:12 the Bible makes clear when sin and death entered the world, "Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned—"
Here again there is no room allowed for long periods of death of the dinosaurs and other living creatures to produce a fossil record predating the arrival of man. Death came into the world through man’s sin. Once again you have to figure out what you are going to do with this verse if you embrace a theory of an old Earth of millions of years.
The Gap theory requires an unnatural reading of the original Hebrew text. The most natural, literal reading of verses one through five using the most basic rules of interpretation indicate that all five verses took place within the first day of creation. (I will not take the time today to identify the fallacies with the many different and creative interpretations given by those attempting to harmonize the Bible with evolution. But I will direct your attention to an excellent resource which is the work of 14 theological scholars who very thoroughly critique many of the popular old-earth interpretations of Genesis and give an in-depth apologetic defense of the literal history of Genesis 1-11. It is titled, "
Coming to Grips with Genesis; Biblical Authority and the Age of the Earth
", edited by Terry Mortenson, and Thane Ury.)
The Lord has recorded His history of how He created the universe in such a way that it is impossible to try to blend creation with evolution without making utter nonsense of the Biblical account. There are at least 33 significant discrepancies between the Biblical account of creation and evolution which are impossible to explain away. I will try to cover most of these discrepancies over the weeks ahead as we work our way through the first chapters of Genesis. Either the theory of evolution is wrong or the Bible is wrong. Harmonizing the two is not an option that God has left open. Evolution, although immensely popular among a fallen race in rebellion against their Creator, is really just a hypothesis in search of evidence, to give it credibility. Followers of Evolution falsely promote their beliefs as proven fact but there is no proof. I challenge you to examine the growing body of evidence against the evolutionary theory being published by credible scientists. We have some of that material available in our library.
4
Why don’t the schools and universities teach any of the intelligent design and young earth scientific discoveries that disagree with evolution? Evolution is really a religious doctrine that offers an alternative explanation for life and existence to the religion of the Bible. Evolution is a religion that has been increasingly embraced by our post-Christian society in their search for an alternative to the Bible. And like most other false religions, devout followers of evolution are not open to opposing religious views. I would encourage you to watch a well done documentary by a secular Jew named Ben Stein, which is available in our library. It is titled, "
Expelled
" and it very effectively exposes the strong religious bias of much of the established scientific and educational community and their closed minded rejection of any view that disagrees with their own evolutionary perspective. As you watch this documentary you will become aware that there is something very dishonest and deceitful going on in our scientific and educational establishments all in the name of science. Evolutionary science is not true open minded science so much as it is a religion bent on ignoring the claims of the Bible.
Both evolution and the teaching of the Bible must be accepted by faith. Both claim that their view is true. The Bible has stood the test of time. Though it has been challenged on many points by millions of critics, over many centuries, it has never yet been proven to be wrong in any of its teaching, including its teaching in Genesis. We believe that the truth of Scripture and the facts of science will never contradict each other. Certain interpretations of Scripture and some opinions of scientists will contradict each other, but genuine science will always be in agreement with Scripture.
(Richard Mayhue, "Is Nature the 67th Book of the Bible?", Coming to Grips with Genesis, Terry Mortenson and Thane Ury, eds., Master Books: Green Forest, AR, 2008, p.123)
We have many resources in our library written by scientists that demonstrate how fossils and geological evidence can be interpreted in a truly scientific way that is consistent with the claims of Scripture.
There are many valid and true scientific teachings and authorities that can supplement the Bible. But there is no other teaching or authority that equals, outweighs or overrules the Scripture. And when it comes to establishing the doctrine of our church we must look to the word of God alone. We accept man’s teaching when it harmonizes with scripture. But when man’s teaching forces us to re-interpret scripture in an unnatural way we must stand on the Word of God. Science has often been wrong and has often changed its theories, but the word of God is forever established in heaven and has never been proven wrong. How long ago was the beginning? When did God create the heavens and the earth? Many scholars and scientists have carefully studied the Bible to calculate the date based on the data given in scripture. The Bible gives very detailed historical records that can be calculated quite closely, but it cannot be calculated to the exact year.
(For a list of the difficulties that hinder an accurate calculation see Henry Morris, "The Genesis Record", p. 43) The best known chronological system based on Biblical data is that of James Ussher who calculated the date of creation to be about 4004 B.C. However the average date that we come up with by those who have endeavored to calculate the earth’s age based on information given in the Bible is 4345 B.C. At the very extreme stretch the Bible simply will not support a date for the creation of man any earlier than 10,000 B.C. without rendering the genealogical record in the Bible completely inaccurate and absurd. And God began creating the Earth 5 days before He created man. So unless you are prepared to throw out the Bible’s genealogical record altogether you have to accept that God created the earth anywhere between 4,000 and 10,000 B.C., and the closer you come to 4,000 B.C. the more
5
literally you are taking the scripture account.
(Travis Freeman, "Do the Genesis 5 and 11 Genealogies Contain Gaps?", Ibid. p. 309)
Such a young date for the earth seems to the evolutionary mind to be a ridiculously short time; just as the evolutionists billions of years seem to the biblical mind to be a ridiculously long time. It should be understood that all calculations of the age of the earth used by evolutionary scientists are based on a number of unproved and, un-testable assumptions. Contrary to their claims, there is no proven scientific evidence to support the evolutionists’ claims of billions of years. Why then do so many Christians embrace this unproven, atheistic theory? It is not solid geological evidence or modern scientific research that causes many Christians to abandon the literal interpretation of Genesis chapter one, in favor of evolution, but it is the fact that too many Christians naively assume that the geologists have
proven that the earth is billions of years old, simply because that is what they are told by the evolutionists. If you hear evolutionary doctrine asserted often enough and forcefully enough as fact you will begin to believe it. It is called brain washing. However, brainwashed or not, we are guilty of treating the Bible with suspicion but accepting the unproven theories of man at face value. The Bible is automatically held guilty unless proven innocent but we give evolution the privilege of being assumed innocent unless proven guilty.
(William Barrick, in Coming to Grips with Genesis, p. 253)
But
Jeremiah 8:9 says,
"Behold, they have rejected the word of the LORD; so what wisdom do they have?"
The last 200 years of church history have recorded many examples of the disastrous consequences of compromise with evolution. Just one tragic example of the consequences of compromise with the teaching of an earth that is millions of years old is Charles Templeton (1915-2001). As a contemporary and friend of Billy Graham, he also was a gifted young evangelist from Canada who led many to Christ as he preached to thousands in North America and Britain. In fact he was considered by many to be an even more gifted evangelist than Billy. But he had questions about evolution. He went to Princeton Seminary in the late 1940’s looking for answers. But by that time this seminary was immersed in liberal theology. Templeton’s professors [like many other Bible College and Seminary professors still today] convinced him that he must accept evolution and millions of years, thereby destroying his faith in the foundational book of the Bible and undermining his faith in the gospel. After seminary, he preached for a few more years. But finally his shattered faith forced him to leave the ministry and go into journalism. He died in 2001 as a miserable atheist. But in 1996 he published "
Farewell to God: My Reasons for Rejecting the Christian Faith". Most of the reasons he gave for rejecting the Christian Faith had to do with the incompatibility of the first eleven chapters of Genesis and what he believed to be the proven theory of evolution. At the conclusion of that book he wrote, "I believe that there is no supreme being with human attributes – no God in the biblical sense – but that life is the result of timeless evolutionary forces, having reached its present transient state over millions of years." (Terry Mortenson, "Deep Time and the Church‟s
6
Compromise", Coming to Grips with Genesis, p. 104. Templeton‟s story is summarized with documentation by Ken Ham and Stacia Byers, "The Slippery Slope to Unbelief" http://www.answersingenesis.org/creation/v22/i3/unbelief.asp )
Obviously the attempt to blend evolution and the Bible is not an innocent matter. The two are as incompatible as Islam and the Bible or Buddhism and the Bible. Therefore we must be careful what we are teaching our children and of what we are letting others teach them unchallenged. In closing listen to this severe warning Jesus gave to those who through their teaching would cause one to stumble in their faith:
Matthew 18:6-7
, ". . . Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him to have a heavy millstone hung around his neck, and to be drowned in the depth of the sea. 7
"Woe to the world because of its stumbling blocks! For it is inevitable that stumbling blocks come; but woe to that man through whom the stumbling block comes!" NASB95
